BLOCK, Louis

1860 - 1909

Ernst Georg Julius Ludwig Block was baptised at Whitechapel, London on 11 March 1860, son of Frederick Henry George Block (1800-1873), a commission agent, and his wife Augusta Frederike C. E. née Heinskam (1817-1878), both born in Prussia [Germany]. In 1861, as Ludwig, a 1-year-old, living at 11 Great Queen Street, Camberwell, London with his parents, 61-year-old George and 43-year-old Augusta, with children Caroline 13, Theodore 9 and in 1871, as Lewis, an 11-year-old scholar, living at East Street, St George the Martyr, Holborn, London with just his parents. He took the name of Louis Block, and a London painter of fruit and still life and exhibited at some of the leading London galleries from 1879 including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and Dudley Gallery, London. In 1881, a 20-year-old artist landscape painter, living at 22 Wansay Street, Southwark, London with his 28-year-old brother Theodore, an accountant, and in 1891 Theodore was a manager of a chocolate factory and Louis an artist, living at Kennington Park Road, Lambeth but by 1901 they had moved to 14 Bermondsey New Road, Southwark when Louis is described as a painter in watercolour. Louis Block 48, artist, and his brother Theodore 56, an agent for a banana importer, committed suicide by taking poison, at their residence in Ellison Road, Streatham, London on 5 June 1909, the inquest was informed that they had had money problems. Block is variously known as Ludwig, Louis or Lewis.
