GARDINER, Marian

1859 - 1950

Marian Gardiner was born in Southtown, then in Suffolk, in late 1859, daughter of William Gardiner, a newspaper editor, who was born at Queen's County in Ireland, and his wife Elizabeth eldest daughter of Robert Harrison of Hull, who married at the Independant Chapel, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 31 July 1858. In 1871, Marian was an 11-year-old, living at Buckingham Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire with her parents, 43-year-old William and 40-year-old Elizabeth, and Marian's younger sibling, 9-year-old Ethelind, also born at Southtown. In 1881, her father William, was a managing editor living at 49 Parchment Street, Winchester, Hampshire with his wife and two daughters, when Marian was described as a 20-year-old 'artist book illustrator (engraver)', working in her father's business, wife Elizabeth was a 50-year-old 'journalist newspaper writer' and daughter Ethelind (Linda) a 'sub-editor'. In 1891, Marian was a 31-year-old 'governess', in the family of 58-year-old widow, Caroline Tristan and her family, at 'Alumhurst', Alumhurst Road, Christchurch, Hampshire but by 1901, a 41-year-old hospital nurse, living at 29 Surrey Street, Norwich. Marian Gardiner was of 'Oakhurst', Fakenham Road, Taverham, Norfolk when she died at The Nursing Home, Constitution Hill, Norwich on 7 March 1950, aged 90, she was unmarried.
