BUNBURY, Sir Henry Edward

Henry Edward Bunbury was born on 4 May 1778, second but only surviving son of Henry William Bunbury, caricaturist, and his wife Catherine Horneck, daughter of Capt. Kane William Horneck, who married on 2 September 1771. Henry was educated at Mr Priest’s academy at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk; Mildenhall School, Suffolk; Westminster 1789 and at High Wycombe 1800. Henry married firstly, on 4 April 1807, Louisa Emilia Fox (died 15 September 1828), daughter of Gen. Henry Edward Fox, and had four sons and two daughters, and secondly on 22 September 1830, Emily Louisa Augusta, daughter of Col. George Napier. He succeeded his uncle, Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury (1740-1821), as 7th Baronet of Barton Hall, on 31 March 1821. A successful army officer, retiring as a Lt General in 1832, local Member of Parliament and served in government including Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1809-1816 and, as a local landowner, was Sheriff of Suffolk 1825-1826. Bunbury, who was a good judge of art and letters, formed a fine library and a collection of pictures and produced many watercolours and drawings during his career. He was also an author including ‘Correspondence of Sir Thomas Hanmer, Bart., Speaker of the House of Commons. (London, 1838); ‘Narrative of the Campaign in North Holland in 1799’ (London, 1849) and ‘Narrative of certain Passages in the late War with France’ (London, 1852). Sir Henry Edward Bunbury died at Barton Hall, near Bury St Edmund's in Suffolk on 13 April 1860, and his eldest son, Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury inherited his title.
