DEANE, Dennis Wood

c.1822 - 1900

Dennis Wood Deane was born at Islington, London around 1822, son John Wood Deane (1786-5 December 1854), a cashier at the Bank of England, and his wife Anna Maria Glasse (1784-September 1859), eldest daughter of Nicholas Glass[e], Comptroller of Customs, Barnstaple, who were both amateur artists, who married in London around April 1817, Dennis's younger brother was the artist and architect William Wood Deane (1825-1873) with whom he travelled on painting tours in Italy 1850-1852. In 1841, the Deane family were living at York Place, Islington with children Anna 21, Dennis 19, William 15 and Alfred 13. Dennis painted scenes from Spanish and Italian history and from Shakespeare and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1841-1868 and at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, two works 'Hebe' and 'Mariana at the Moated Grange'. He married at Marylebone, London in 1865, Charlotte Sophia Cousins (1844-1915), who was admitted to Bethlem Mental Hospital, London in 1866 'suffering from mania' and when discharged in 1869 'not improved' and seems to have spent the rest of her live as a patient. In 1871, Dennis was a 49-year-old married artist & landowner, living at Clifford Inn, St Dunstan West, City of London and ten years later, a 59-year-old married 'journalist', lodging at 12 Salisbury Street, St Martin in the Fields, Strand, London, the home of Joseph Preston and his family, in either year no wife is noted. Artist and art critic, Dennis Wood Deane died at 39 Queen's Square, Bloomsbury, London on 31 March 1900, aged 78, when his wife was an inmate of Brookwood Asylum, Surrey.
