McMAHON, Alexander Ruxton
Alexander Ruxton McMahon was born at Bengal, India on 30 November 1829, son of Maj. Alexander St Leger McMahon (1790-21 August 1866) and his wife Catherine Maria Fishbourne (1802-3 December 1865), eldest daughter of Robert Moore Fishbourne of Hollymount, Queen's Co., Ireland, who married at The Cathedral, Calcutta on 16 December 1828. Alexander joined the army on 20 August 1847 and was married at Bengal, India on 11 July 1855, Horatia Anna Davies (28 June 1835-15 September 1856) and they had one daughter Horatia Georgina Isabella [Winter] (9 September 1856-1933). Alexander was promoted captain on 18 February 1861 and married secondly at Rangoon, Burma on 13 May 1862, Jemima Fannie Carthew (24 December 1842-1914), daughter of General Morden Carthew (25 October 1804-4 September 1888) of the Madras Army and of Denton Lodge, Harleston, Norfolk and his wife Jemima Borland Ewart, they had three daughters Ethel Clara, Mary Gertrude Helen (5 September 1864-17 December 1866) and Violet Mabel (18 November 1873-1 February 1876). Alexander was promoted major on 20 August 1867 and was Deputy Commissioner in Burma 1869-1879 being promoted Lt. Col. in 1873 and Brevet Colonel on the Madras Staff Corps on 20 August 1878 and retired with the hon. rank of Major-General on 31 May 1879. Alexander was of Crowe Hall, Stutton, near Ipswich when he exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1883 two paintings, an oil 'Fra Giovanni' and a watercolour 'Il Ponte Nero, Bagni di Lucca'. Alexander Ruxton McMahon died at 3 Whitehall Court, Strand, London on 28 December 1899 and buried at Denton, Norfolk on 2 January 1900, his will was proved in London in 1900.
