STANLEY, Charles Horace

1822 - 1890

Charles Horace Stanley was born in London on 13 April 1822 and baptised at St George's, Hanover Square, London on 3 December 1822, son of Caleb Robert Stanley and his wife Ann née Miles, who married at Marylebone, London on 10 January 1817. Charles exhibited, as did his father and brother Archer Stanley, at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 'Temptation'. In 1851, a 28-year-old historical painter, living at Maddox Street, St George's, Hanover Square, London with his parents, 55-year-old Caleb, an artist landscape painter, and 60-year-old Ann, with five siblings, Anne 31, Jemima 30, Archer 25 a landscape painter, Georgina 22 and Caleb 18 a scholar. He married at Streatham Church, Surrey on 18 August 1857, Ellen Frances Barry (1820-1876), daughter of the late Charles Barry of Jermyn Street, St James and their eldest son Charles Greville Stanley was born at Mornington Crescent on 25 May 1859, who also became a portrait painter. In 1881, a 58-year-old widowed portrait painter, living at 3 Milton Place, Milton-next-Gravesend, Kent with his 21-year-old son, Charles Greville Stanley. Charles Horace Stanley died at Milton Place, Gravesend, Kent and was buried in the local cemetery on 18 July 1890.
