CHANDLER, Emily
Emily Chandler was born at Ipswich on 5 April 1864, second daughter of William Chandler (1829-1898), a farmer at Ringsfield Hall, Suffolk and his wife Ellen née Barnard (1834-11 December 1916), who married the Congregational Chapel, London Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 9 May 1861. In 1881, Emily was a 17-year-old scholar, living at the Farmhouse, Norwich Road, Whitton, Ipswich with her parents, 52-year-old William and 47-year-old Ellen, with two sibling sisters, Ellen 19 and Redelpha 12, both born at Ipswich. Emily studied at the Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880 gaining her certificate in freehand drawing and where she exhibited in December 1884 when her work was 'with considerable ability' and exhibited in both 1885 and 1886 but she does not seem to have exhibited again. She married at All Saints' Church, Sproughton, near Ipswich on 4 July 1887, [later Sir] William Parker Burton (1864-1942), merchant, importer & wholesale grocer. In 1891, a 27-year-old wife, living at Willoughby Road, Ipswich with her 26-year-old husband and their 2-year-old daughter Emily May, born Ipswich. Her husband was a director of Burton, Son & Sanders of Ipswich and a noted sportsman and a contender in the America's Cup for sailing and was a brother of Sir Bunnell Henry Burton. Lady Emily Burton died at The Cottage, Burstall, Ipswich on 14 November 1941.
