MASON, Maitland

1861 - 1951

Maitland Mason was born at Kersey Mill, The Green, Kersey, Suffolk on 11 March 1861, youngest child of Benjamin Mason (7 January 1813-18 December 1889), farmer, miller & maltster, and his first wife Ellen Mary née Sheldrake (1817-1863), who marred at the Independent Church, Kersey on 28 March 1844. In 1861, a newly born, living at Kersey Mill with his parents, Benjamin 48 and Ellen 43 and five siblings, Emma W. 15, Jane Elizabeth 8, Eva 7, Julia 5 and Benjamin 2, all born at Kersey. His mother died in 1863 when his father married secondly in East London in 1865, Mary Crofts Smith (c1816-12 September 1897). By 1881, Maitland was a 20-year-old corn miller, working at Mill Street, Dedham, Essex in his 22-year-old brother Benjamin's mill with Maitland's 24-year-old sister Julia as housekeeper. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1883, from Kersey Mill, an oil painting 'On the Stour at Dedham' and in 1855 from the same address 'On the Brett' he is also known to have painted 'Aldham Mill'. By 1891, a miller & merchant, living at 131 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk with his 74-year-old stepmother, Mary Crofts Mason, and his unmarried sister, 34-year-old Julia Mason. In 1900 he was advertising for an Art Master for Hadleigh British Boys School. Maitland was still living with sister Julia at Hadleigh High Street in 1911 and was still at 131 High Street, Hadleigh in 1939. His sister Julia (4 June 1856-2 December 1949) died at Hadleigh, Suffolk and Maitland Mason was of 131 High Street, Hadleigh, when he died at The Bridges Farm, Kersey on 20 March 1951, he was unmarried.
