OELMAN, Michael

Michael J. Oelman was born in Llandudno, Wales in 1941, eldest of the three children of Frederick Augustus Oelman (25 August 1911-5 April 1969), an executive officer at Inland Revenue, and his wife Ethel Elizabeth née Harry (1 June 1912-21 September 1979). Michael was educated at Steyning Grammar School and studied at Reading University 1960-1964 gaining a B.A. (hons) Fine Art, followed by studies in etching and lithography at the Central School of Arts & Crafts and the Slade School of Art 1964-1965. In 1966 he was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study at Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) Art School in Paris. Lecturer in Printmaking at Doncaster College of Art, Yorkshire 1967-1969, in 1970 exhibition director at the Bluecoat Society of Arts in Liverpool and in the early 70s an artist at New Crane Studio, Wapping, London. He married in the Sudbury, Suffolk district in 1979, Vreneli Maryilyn Schmid (born 1948), a former art student at Nottingham Art College, and they had two daughters. Since 1979 he has lived and has his studio at Waterloo House, Polstead Hill, Polstead, Suffolk. Michael has had solo exhibitions at Oldham City Art Gallery; Compendium Art Gallery, Birmingham; Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol; Gorner & Millard, London; British Council, Aberdeen, Athens and Australia, with group exhibitions at Stedalijk Museaum, Holland; Imperial College, London; Art for Schools, London; Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool; Art for Schools, Belfast; The Yarrow Gallery, Oundle and elsewhere.
