BALFOUR-BROWNE, Eileen Frances

1905 - 1980

Eileen Frances Balfour-Browne was born at Smallburgh, Norfolk on 20 January 1905, second of the three children of William Alexander Francis [Frank] Balfour-Browne (27 September 1874-28 September 1967), the entomologist, and his wife Elizabeth Lochhead née Carslaw (3 June 1874-2 June 1947), who was also an artist, they married at Glasgow on 4 October 1902. In 1911, Eileen was a 6-year-old, living at 29 Victoria Road, Hollywood Urban, co. Down when her father was a teacher at the Belfast College of the Royal University of Ireland. Eileen was educated at Perse School, Cambridge and studied at St Martins School of Art in London under wood engraver Noel Rooke (1881-1953). In 1927, when she and her mother sailed for Jamaica, her address was given as 32 Talbot Road, Highgate, London and in 1934, 29-year-old Eileen and her 60-year-old mother Elizabeth sailed for Sydney, Australia on the 'Largs Bay' when their address was Larkhill House, Abingdon, Berkshire. Eileen exhibited at the Royal Academy and in 1933 also exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from Larkhill House 'Spring'. In 1962, Eileen was living at Acorn Cottage, Station Road, Verwood, Dorset from where she was a member of the Bournemouth Natural Science Club. Eileen Frances Balfour-Browne died at Acorn Cottage, Station Road, Wimborne, Dorset on 6 April 1980, she was unmarried. Her younger brother, John William Alexander Francis Balfour-Browne (1907-2001), also an entomologist, became a Principal Scientific Officer at the Natural History Museum, London and her elder sister was Violet Elizabeth Caroline Balfour-Browne (1903-).
