GASKELL, William John Clare

1906 - 1966

William John Clare Gaskell was born at Newport, Wales on 23 February and baptised at Portskewett, Monmouthshire on 20 April 1906, son of William George Gaskell (3 May 1876-9 January 1915), a company secretary to a firm of brewers, and his wife Florence Winifred née Williams (c1867-6 April 1929), who married at Portskewett on 3 September 1903. In 1911, young William was a 5-year-old, living at 10 Caerau Crescent, Newport, Monmouthshire with his parents, 34-year-old William and 43-year-old Florence with two siblings, Winifred Mary 6 and Frederick George Harold 1, with a governess and two indoor servants. Gaskell exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 27 Kew Green, Kew, Surrey in 1933, a watercolour 'A Sussex Farmhouse' and exhibited landscapes and romantic classical scenes at the Royal Academy from 1934 and continued showing at the Academy until 1964. Elected an Associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1955 and became a full member in 1960. He married at All Saints' Church, Boughton Aluph, Ashford, Kent on 1 October 1938, Adeline Mellor (29 December 1914-29 December 1998), only daughter of Sydney Paget Mellor of Aluph House, when he gave his address as Chelsea Art Club. In 1939, an 'art buyer', living at Aluph House, East Ashford with his wife, which was the home of his father-in-law's second wife, Mabel Ceylonia Mellor (1 May 1875-16 November 1962), a widow. William John Clare Gaskell was of Aluph House, Boughton Aluph, Kent when he died at Polla House Estate, Hothfield, Kent on 5 November 1966.
