HODGE, Francis Edwin

1881 - 1949

Francis Edwin Hodge was born at Plymouth, Devon on 12 November 1881, son of Edwin John Hodge (5 November 1852-1 February 1934), a saddler, and his wife Lydia née Pond (c.1859-1933), who married at Plymouth earlier that year. Francis was educated at Charles Boys School, Plymouth from 30 March 1885 and Sutton High School, Plymouth from 5 September 1892, both entrances giving his date of birth as 12 November 1881, and studied at Westminster School of Art before furthering his studies at the Slade School of Fine Art. Among his tutors were Augustus John (1878-1961), William Orpen (1878-1931) and Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) and he also studied for a brief time in Paris. Hodge was commissioned as a painter by the British Army during the First World War and some of his paintings are held by the Imperial War Museum. A decorative artist and portrait painter and in 1933, exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 62 Glebe Place, Chelsea, London, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy; International Society of Sculptors Painters and Gravers; New English Art Club; Royal Society of Portrait Painters; Royal Society of British Artists and elsewhere. He married in 1938, Mfanwy Hazel Bruce Dunlop (11 September 1911-1 October 2005) and in 1939, an artist painter, still living at 62 Glebe Place, Chelsea, giving his birth year as 1882, with his wife Hazel Bruce, an artist & art teacher. Francis Edwin Hodge was of 2a Sydney Close, Chelsea when he died at Middlesex Hospital, Marylebone, London W.1 on 6 February 1949, leaving a widow, who married in 1950 Sir Eric Wilfred Fish (1891-1974). He signed his work 'F. E. Hodge'.
