SANDES, Sophia
Sophia Sandes was born at Sunday's Well, Cork, County Cork, Ireland on 18 March 1859, daughter of Revd Samuel Dickson Sandes (4 November 1822-23 August 1914) and his wife Sophia Julia née Besnard (1833-1 October 1911), who married at Holy Trinity, Cork, Ireland on 4 November 1856. Her father was curate to Revd Henry Browne Longe at Monewden, Suffolk and in 1881, Sophia was a 22-year -old, living at The Rectory, Monewden, with her parents, 58-year-old Samuel, clerk in holy orders, and 48 year old Sophia with siblings Mary 19, Fanny Elizabeth 11, both born in Ireland and Flora 5, born in Yorkshire, they had other children including Stephen, John Samuel Dickson and William Besnard. In 1885 her father was instituted as rector of Marlesford, Suffolk and Sophia exhibited from Marlesford Rectory at the Woodbridge Industrial & Art Exhibition at the Lecture Rooms, Woodbridge in April 1887, an oil painting 'Head from Rembrandt' and a watercolour 'Gateway, Old Hall, Parham'. Sophia married at Marlesford on 31 January 1888, Dr Arthur De Chair Baker (1862-19 April 1923), a medical practitioner, and in 1901, a 42-year-old wife of 38-year-old Dr Arthur De Chair Baker, living at 30 Liverpool Road, Croydon, Surrey with their three children, Stephen Leonard 12, Gerald Wollaston 10 and Phyllis Kathleen 4, they had another daughter Dorothy born in 1892 who was living with them at Croydon in 1911. In 1921 Sophia and her husband were living at 3 Haling Park Road, Croydon, Surrey but after the death of her husband in 1923 Sophia returned to live in Suffolk. Sophia was of 3 Chimneys, Orford, Suffolk when she died at 2 Sydenham Road, Croydon on 29 March 1929.
