MOSTYN, George Anthony
George Anthony Mostyn was born in Rome on 11 April 1898, son of Hon. Harold Plantagenet Mostyn (26 December 1865-9 February 1951), an artist, and his wife Elena Zammit (1872-9 February 1953), daughter of Antonio Zammit, who married on 4 July 1894, Elena was born in Africa. In 1911, George was a 12-year-old student at St Gregory's Roman Catholic College, Midsomer Norton, Downside, Bath, and later went up to Balliol College, Oxford. George had a career in the army and was a Lieut. in the 60th Rifles during the First World War and a Major in the Intelligence Corps during the Second. He married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 18 September 1924, Catherine Sibylla Holland (1903-1983), daughter of Bernard Henry Holland and Florence Helen Duckworth and they came to live at Walberswick, Suffolk, they had five children, three sons and two daughters. A self-taught painter in oil, of landscapes and still life, and lived at The Corner House, Walberswick. A prominent member of Walter Crittall's Sole Bay Group and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1933-1938 and exhibited from the Corner House in 1933 two oils, 'Walberswick' and 'The Southwold Ferry', four works in 1935 'Cinerarias', ‘White Cyclamen', 'Sheds near Beccles' and ‘Saw Mills, Beccles’, he also exhibited in Paris. George Anthony Mostyn died at Monastery Cottage, King Street, Canterbury, Kent on 26 May 1972.
