NURSEY, Revd Perry

1799 - 1867

Perry Nursey was born at The Grove, Little Bealings, on the 23 December 1799 and baptised at Little Bealings church four days later, third son of Perry Nursey and his wife Anne née Simpson (1766-1844), his brothers included Claude Lorraine Nursey and Poussin Hazard Nursey. Perry was educated at East Bergholt, Suffolk and at Stowmarket, Suffolk and admitted pensioner at Corpus Christi on 24 October 1818 migrating to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge from where he graduated B.A. in 1822. Ordained deacon at Norwich on 22 September 1822 and priest on 5 October 1823 and licensed to the curacy of Burlingham in Norfolk where he remained until 7 October 1863 when presented to the living of Crostwick, Norfolk, succeeding the Revd John Perowne. He married firstly at Scarning, Norfolk on 10 January 1827, Charlotte, youngest daughter of the late Revd William Press Smith, former rector of Waxham and Palling, Norfolk, she died at Wells, Norfolk on 5 June 1833, aged 31, leaving three sons; and secondly on 28 December 1837 at Little Blakenham, Suffolk, Sarah, daughter of Mr Boult of Aldeby, Norfolk, who bore him more five children. A clergyman, poet, and a painter of landscapes which are sometimes confused with his father's as, like his father, he exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists. As Perry Nursey, jun. he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1818 and as an Honorary Member in 1823-9, also showing at the Norwich Society of Artist from Boulge Cottage, Melton, Woodbridge in 1828 three paintings, in 1829 three paintings and in 1830 another three, the titles included 'Evening, A Landscape from Nature' which had been exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1824 and 'Wood Hall, near Woodbridge'. In September 1834 he advertised 'with the assistance of his son, Mr. Claude Nursey, to give instructions in painting and drawing, and attend at Ipswich twice and Bury [St Edmund's] once a week.' On 22 February 1867 he assigned 'his estate and effects to Edward Joshua Freeman and Alexander Robert Chamberlain for the equal benefit of his creditors' and Revd Perry Nursey died at Crostwick Rectory 'after a long and painful illness' on 16 April 1867, aged 68, and was buried in the local churchyard. His wife Sarah died at Bromley College, Kent on 26 April 1892, aged 81 to whom his 'Evening, with other Poems' (Longman 1 September 1829) is dedicated but is often incorrectly attributed to his father. His second son Julian Titian Nursey, 3rd officer of the ship Ratcliff, died at Spithead, 22 July 1848, aged 22.
