TURVEY, Robert
Robert Elijah Turvey was born at 22 Norfolk Street, Cambridge St Andrew the Less on 5 April 1879, son of Thomas Robert Turvey (1850-14 October 1890), a bricklayer, who was born at Banham, Norfolk and his wife Ellen née Tarrant (1854-20 June 1890), who married at Cambridge in 1873. In 1891, Robert was a 12-year-old 'adopted orphan' at 28-29 Fitzroy Street, Cambridge, the home of 37-year-old Charles Redgeon, a master butcher, and his family. Robert married at Rotherham in 1901, Violet Maud Sturgeon (27 September 1881-9 February 1951) and in 1921 was an 'out of work iron turner' living at 3 Church Row, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk with his wife Violet and their three children Jessie 17, Violet 14 and Elijah 9, all born in Sheffield. Later in 1921 he set up as a butcher at 134 Southgate Street, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk but by 1925 had a confectioners and tobacconist's shop at the same address. A talented artist in oil and watercolour also drawing, who regularly exhibited locally including 'The Norman Tower, Bury St Edmund's'. Robert Elijah Turvey died at his home in Southgate Street, Bury St Edmund's on 11 January 1948, aged 68 and buried in the local cemetery on 15 January.
