PORTER, John

1825 - 1905

John Patterson Porter was born at Chipping, Lancashire on 15 November 1825 and baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bury, Lancashire on 14 May 1826, son of William Porter and his wife Jane. John married at St Peter's Church, Yoxford, Suffolk on 22 February 1855, Charlotte Ann Bailey (1833-1905) and in 1861, a 35-year-old photographic artist, living at Manor Street, Braintree, Essex with his 26-year-old wife Charlotte, who was born at Yoxford and four children Frederick Lowry 4, born Halesworth, Alice 2, born Stowmarket, Harriet Jane 1, born Dunmow, Essex and a newly born unnamed daughter [Jessie], born Braintree. John Patterson Porter is noted as an artist at Halesworth in the Ipswich Journal of 28 September 1867, but he was a photographic artist. In 1871 they were living at Bungay Road, Halesworth, Suffolk when 45-year-old John was a photographic artist with 37-year-old Charlotte with ten children, additions were twins Victoria Florence and Albert Edward Harriet 8, Charlotte Ellen 7, Richard Cobden 6, Ann Elizabeth 2 and John Thomas Welsic 1, all born in Halesworth. They were still at the same address in 1881, John a photographer and Charlotte, a boot & shoe dealer, and eight of their children including three additions, Oliver Cromwell 9, Walter Joseph 7 and George Washington 4, all Halesworth born. By 1891 they had moved to 32 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk where John was still a photographer, but Charlotte was a boarding housekeeper and Charlotte was still a boarding housekeeper at the same address in 1901 and where she died on 1 November 1905. In 1901 her husband John was a 75-year-old, a visitor at 126 Francis Avenue, Portsmouth, Hampshire, the home of his 37-year-old married daughter Lottie (Charlotte) Fairchild and her family. John Patterson Porter died back at Chorlton, Lancashire in 1905, aged 80. No paintings have been noted by this 'photographic artist'.
