PAYN, Pethuel Edwin

1885 - 1948

Pethuel Edwin Payn was born at Deal, Kent on 18 November 1885 and baptised at Ramsgate Christ Church on 15 June 1890, only son and fifth child of the six children of Edwin Payn, a tailor, and his wife Elizabeth née Smith, who married at Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire on 23 January 1877. In 1891, Pethuel was living at 20 High Street, Thanet, Kent with his parents, 43-year-old Edwin, born Wingham, Kent and 45-year-old Elizabeth, born Colchester, Essex and his five sisters, Helen Elizabeth 11, Lillian E. 9, Lena Alice 7, Florence Julia 6 and Rose 3. In 1911, Pethuel was a 25-year-old artist, boarding at 31 Kings Avenue, Ipswich, the home of Harry Sutton and his family. He married at Ipswich on 5 June 1911, Mary Ann Caroline Sutton (31 August 1885-1951), daughter of his landlord Harry Sutton, and the Payn's daughter Elizabeth Ellen May, was born at Ipswich on 22 March 1912. After serving as a photographer in the Royal Flying Corps (122469) during the First World War, in December 1919 he sailed from Liverpool on the 'Haverford' for Philadelphia, USA. By 1939 he had returned to the U.K. and was a general labourer living at 24a Thorngate Road, Paddington, London with a 'married' Doris V. Carpenter, an unemployed store worker. In 1948 he was living at 24a Thorngate Road, Maida Hill, London and Pethuel Edwin Payn died at Paddington Hospital, London on 30 June 1948, aged 61. His will was proved at £412 with his effect going to Doris Victoria Carpenter (16 April 1901-1972), spinster. His wife Mary Ann never left Ipswich and in 1939, she was living at Ipswich with a Stephen Daniel Grayston (1885-1953) and where she died in 1951.
