Jonathan S. Pryke was born at Ipswich in 1943, son of Gerald Ernest Pryke (26 October 1919-1 April 2021) and his wife Doris Kathleen B. née Crane (7 March 1920-2000), who married at Ipswich in 1941, and he grew up in Hopton in North Suffolk. Jon studied at Ipswich School of Art 1959-1962 obtaining an Intermediate Certificate in Arts and Crafts; London College of Printing 1961-1963 with a National Diploma in Design and at Goldsmiths College 1977-1978 for his Art Teachers Certificate. Part-time lecturer at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, Ravensbourne School of Art, and Ipswich School of Art 1971-1977. During his early thirties, Pryke was diagnosed with a type of macular degeneration, a degenerative eye condition that effects the retina, resulting in a progressive loss of eyesight which came as a blow, but he did not allow this stop him from working. It was during this time that he made the decision to return to his first love, painting. Elected to membership of the Royal Society of British Artists in 2004 and a Council member 2006-2008. He now works in pastel and is a frequent contributor to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Marine Artists; the Pastel Society; The Royal Society of British Artists at the Mall Galleries, London. As well as many successful studio shows including at the Affordable Art Fair; Art on Paper and the Dublin, Edinburgh and Cambridge Art Fairs with solo exhibitions at Martin Caldwell Associates 1998; Stark Gallery, London 1999-2004; The Artists’ Gallery, Ipswich 2004 and ‘Seeing Europe’ at Alte Lederfabrik, Cologne 2012. His works are in the public collection of Christchurch Mansion Ipswich and in private collections in the USA, Spain, Portugal, Holland and Japan and his commissions include those from The Palace of Westminster; Downing Street and Wayford Manor in Somerset. He currently lives in Southeast London but frequently returns to paint the Suffolk landscape.
