PARKINSON, Gordon

1952 - 2022

Gordon Eric Parkinson was born at Ipswich in 1952, son of Eric Richard Parkinson (8 November 1917-2003) and his first wife Olive M. E. Rodd (23 April 1920-1967), who married at Ipswich in 1944. Gordon was educated at the Northgate Grammar School in Ipswich where he also studied art. He then worked for Ipswich agriculture machinery maker Ransomes as an illustrator of mechanical parts and exhibition designer and later joined a Florida-based advertising agency in the United States, winning an award for best campaign design at a local awards ceremony. On his return to Ipswich he continued in advertising, building a small company, based in Sproughton before moving to nearby Claydon. His first love, though, was painting and he eventually gave up his day job to focus on painting and illustrating and Gordon Parkinson, who was a member of the British Art Club, was known for his high-quality paintings, including of boats at Walberswick and scenes of Brugge, which he donated to the Press Ball. He exhibited at various galleries and exhibitions throughout East Anglia, and he opened a gallery in Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk. Gordon Eric Parkinson died on 27 January 2022, aged 69.
