RIBBANS, Albert

1903 - 1966

Albert Charles Ribbans was born at Ipswich on 15 November 1903, son of Edwin Bailey Ribbans (1876-1909), an ironmonger, and his wife Elizabeth née Butcher (1877-1933), who married at Stowupland, Suffolk in 1900. Albert was admitted pupil at Clifford Road School, Ipswich in 1910 and in 1911, was living at 15 Bartholomew Street, Ipswich with his widowed mother and his siblings, Edwin 9, Beatrice 5 and Gertrude 2. Albert studied at the Ipswich School of Art and was encouraged in his art by his friend Leonard Squirrell. He worked as an architect and town planner and for twelve years an artist attached to a firm specialising in interior decoration and carried out the decorative panels for the Dorchester Hotel, later worked on his own account as a mural and water colour painter. He exhibited at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Royal Academy; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour; the New English Art Club and many provincial galleries, including Edinburgh, Cardiff and Brighton, 1931-1940 from Ipswich and from Rushmere, near Ipswich 1936. He illustrated most of the post-war covers for the 'East Anglian Magazine' until his death. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1923-1966 and exhibited from 365 Norwich Road, Ipswich in 1923, three pastel drawings 'Moonlit Docks, Ipswich', 'Summer Evening, Framlingham Meadows' and 'Framlingham Castle', in 1927 five watercolours 'An Old Mill, Norfolk', 'Spring Sunshine, The Gully, Framlingham', 'Up the Orwell from Pin Mill', 'Clearing after Rain, Woodbridge from Little Sutton' and 'Corn Fields above Thornage, Norfolk' and exhibited several pictures every year, including at the centenary exhibition in 1974 his watercolour 'Inner Harbour, Polperro, Cornwall'. He also exhibited at Tibbenham's Art Gallery, Upper Brook Street, Ipswich from Elm Hatch, Woodbridge Road, Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich in 1943 'The Wharfe, Woodbridge', which he also exhibited at the Royal Academy, 'Porlock Wier Harbour' and 'Oxted Church, near Buxton, Norfolk'. He married at Shenfield Parish Church, Essex on 31 August 1935, Edith Allingham Bennett (13 August 1904-28 August 1983), daughter of Cornelius Bennett of The Oaks, Mountnessing, Essex. Albert Charles Ribbans was of 80 Woodbridge Road, Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich when he died at St Audry's Hospital for Mental Diseases, Melton, Woodbridge on 9 September 1966.
