Susan Ruth Hammond was born at Rendlesham, Suffolk in 1966, youngest of the four children of Peter Derek Hammond and his wife Valerie M née Brewster, who married at Rendlesham in 1958. Susie, as she was known, spent her childhood in Iken, Suffolk until around 1978 when her parents separated when she went to live with an elder sister at Bawdsey, Suffolk. After being denied the opportunity to study at an art school, she went to work on the Bentwaters former Air Station at Woodbridge but then decided to travel to Australia. On her return she studied Theatre Design at the Seagull Theatre at Lowestoft and studied landscape and garden designer at Otley College near Ipswich. Susie is an illustrator and is known for her prolific intricate ink pen drawings and paintings, drawing her inspiration from her rural surroundings in the Suffolk village in which she lives. Susie is influenced by nature in all its forms and local history, myths and legends with hares and Suffolk sheep amongst her most popular pieces of work. For Susie every picture holds a story, it may be a glimpse of a hare on the common or the sheep down on the marshes or a complete fantastical character inspired by the imagery in her thoughts and observations. Susie played a major role in the 'Beowulf' festival at Woodbridge with her artwork projected onto the Woodbridge Tide Mill and she has exhibited at Art on the Prom from 1 Jubilee Close, Blaxhall, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Susie is also a keen musician, singer-songwriter, and poet.
