LONGHURST, Ian

Ian A Longhurst was born in Ipswich in 1961, son of James Cyril Longhurst (12 March 1930-1985) and his wife Sylvia E née Day (1934-), who married at Ipswich in 1957. As a youngster, Ian used to keep and show canaries and native birds, breeding and studying their behaviour and at the same time was drawing and painting whenever he was able. Art was his strong subject at school, and he considered taking art as a career but left his painting to become a bricklayer and has worked as a builder and kitchen/bathroom fitter for over 25 years in the Essex/Suffolk border area. A self-taught artist he continued with his painting and using his photography as a guide, paints in most medias but specialised with gouache. A member of the Colchester Art Society from Alresford, Essex and has exhibited with the Ipswich Art Society and at Wivenhoe Bookshop; Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe; Snape Maltings Galleries, Aldeburgh; Dedham Art and Craft Centre and elsewhere.
