ROBINSON, George (1876-1945)
George Robinson was born at Cleator, Whitehaven, Cumbria on 14 April 1876, son of Robert Robinson and his wife Harriet (1834-1877). In 1881, George the elder was a 44-year-old a 'tread maker' and a widower, living at 2 Croft Terrace, Cleator with his eight children from Joseph 24 down to young George 3. Young George married at Chelmsford, Essex in 1903, Ida Jane Burroughes (30 November 1876-15 July 1964) and in 1911, a 33-year-old 'show card designer', living at 52 Lacey Street, Ipswich with his 33-year-old Norwich born wife Ida and his sister-in-law, 40-year-old Ethel Burroughes. A painter of landscapes in watercolour and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1909-1944 and exhibited from 106 Constable Road, Ipswich in 1923, six watercolours 'North Wales', 'The Orwell', 'The Old Mill, Ufford', 'The Orwell from Hog Island', 'The Deben, Woodbridge' and 'Sproughton', in 1927 a further six watercolours 'Newquay, Cornwall', 'The Harbour, Scarborough', 'On the Deben', 'Ufford', 'Pin Mill on the Orwell' and 'Callander, Scotland' and was a regular annual exhibitor, exhibiting four watercolours in 1941 'The Aberglaslyn Pass', 'Ilfracombe', 'Beddgelert' and 'Arthog, near Barmouth', three in 1942 'North Wales', 'Near Fort William' and 'Near Waters Meet', four in 1943 'Beddgelert', 'A Bit of Scotland', 'On the Clyde' and 'The River Gipping' and four watercolours in 1944 'River Orwell', 'River Deben', 'Barmouth Estuary' and 'Kitchatten Bay, Bute'. In 1939, a 'master letterpress printer' still living at 106 Constable Road, Ipswich with his wife Ida where George Robinson died on 17 February 1945, aged 68. Although a prolific painter no examples of his work has yet been uncovered.
