DEBENHAM, Charles

Charles Debenham was born at Colchester, Essex in 1933. He was educated at Colchester Royal Grammar School and studied at evening classes at Colchester School of Art before studying full-time as an illustrator 1948–1953, his tutors included John O'Connor, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Hugh Cronyn and Carel Weight (1908-1997) and he obtained a National Diploma of Design (NDD). A painter and designer, Debenham joined an advertising company before setting up his own design business and was appointed designer for The Office of the Crown Agents, for whom he designed, among other things, postage stamps. His work in public information included clients from the America’s Department of Agriculture, Anglian Water, British Telecom and the National Grid to Bowater, St Paul’s Cathedral and London International Boat Show travelling extensively, designing exhibitions. At the same time, Debenham gained a reputation as an artist exhibiting at the Royal Academy also showing at the Royal West of England Academy, Southwest Academy and Colchester Art Society, of which he was a senior member. His solo shows included at the Minories and Digby Gallery, in Colchester; Gainsborough’s House and Quay Theatre, in Sudbury; and Chappel Galleries, Essex.
