ROPE, Emmeline Anna
Emmeline Anna Rope was born at Orford, Suffolk on 12 March and baptised on 4 May 1856, daughter of Edward Rope (17 January 1816-27 September 1898), maltster merchant, and his wife Emma Elizabeth Crisp (14 February 1819-26 March 1895), third daughter of Edward Crisp of Gedgrave Hall, who married at Orford, Suffolk on 22 May 1851. In 1881, Emmeline was a 25-year-old, living at Quay Street, Orford with her parents, 65-year-old Edward and 62-year-old Emma, with four siblings Mary 27, Charles 26, Walter Henry 21 and Louisa 19, all born at Orford. Emmeline studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art from where in 1884, she exhibited her still life oil at South Kensington Museum of Art. She also exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 33 Berners Street, Ipswich in 1884, a watercolour 'Still Life'. Emmeline seems to have travelled around Suffolk quite a bit as in 1891 she was living with the Crisp family at Playford Hall and in 1901 a visitor at the Biddell family home at Birnam Lodge, Crescent Road, Ipswich. In 1911, 55-year-old Emmeline, together with two sisters Mary 57 and Maria 49 and brother Alfred 53, all unmarried and on 'private means', were back living at The Gables, Orford. In 1939, she was living at Top House, 17 The Terrace, Aldeburgh, Suffolk but Emmeline Anna Rope died at Morecambe, Lancashire on 14 August 1940, aged 84, she was unmarried.
