AMYOT, Cathinca

1845 - 1926

Cathinca Caroline Engelhart was born in Copenhagen on 6 February 1845, an adopted daughter of Christian Engelhart, a bank official, and his wife Nathalie née Rønne. She spent her childhood in Copenhagen where she was taught art by the Danish painter Carl Bøgh (1827–1893) and she spent much time travelling abroad from 1867 to improve her work. After Brussels, she settled in Düsseldorf for some seven years, studying under the Swiss Benjamin Vautier (1829-1898). Engelhart exhibited in Copenhagen's Kunsthal Charlottenborg as well as in Düsseldorf and travelled to Oslo in 1875 and then to Stockholm where she painted two posthumous portraits of King Carl Johan as King of Norway which had been commissioned by King Oscar II. After a short stay in Copenhagen, in 1876 she went to Paris and studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and while in Paris, she met Dr. Thomas Howes Edward Amyot, a medical practitioner who was born at Diss, Norfolk in 1850, and they married on 16 May 1878, and returned to England and lived at Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Catherine and Thomas Howes Edward Amyot had three children, all born in Diss, Norfolk: Thomas Engelhart (born 1879), Catherine Florence (born 1880) and Noel Ethel (born 1882). In 1891 they were living at 30 Penywern Road, Kensington 40-year-old Thomas and 46-year-old Caroline with their three children and retained two indoor servants and by 1901 were living at 14 Dalby Square, Margate. Thomas Amyot died at 14 Dalby Square, Cliftonville, Margate, Kent on 22 October 1903, aged 53, leaving his effects to his wife, and Cathinca Caroline Amyot died at Sèvres, near Paris in 1926.
