FREE PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS

1952 - ?

Free Painters and Sculptors (FPS) was founded in 1952 when painter members of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) formed an individual group which was originally known as the Free Painters Group which was changed in the mid-sixties. The aim was to present contemporary painting and sculpture to the public by means of exhibitions that are unrestricted in style or tradition and which provide a balanced and representative cross-section of the current international art scene. In addition to its regular exhibition 'Trends' which is held in London and is open to non-members, the Society also organises exhibitions in other parts of the country. Membership is open to anyone interested in the visual arts, although full membership is restricted to painters and sculptors and is granted by election of the Executive Committee on the submission of acceptable samples of work.
