David Messum Fine Paintings first opened at 1 The Parade, Bourne End, in 1963, the company has been an active influence in the British art market, known for its pioneering research and promotion of British artists, as well as its entrepreneurial approach to dealing fine art. David Messum fostered many long lasting and important relationships with clients and dealers in an area of the country that was key to dealing Victorian art and design. In 1968 David moved to 26 London End in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and his first curated exhibition 'The Devonshire Scene' in 1973, he accompanied with a fully researched and illustrated catalogue and laid the foundations for all future exhibitions he would produce. David's first London gallery was at 11 Bury Street, St James's which was a major development in the company's trading, providing a prestigious location to deal high quality traditional and British Impressionist paintings, and began to specialise in marine artists which helped to diversify the company's stock. In 1988 David opened his second London gallery at 34 St George Street opened with a major exhibition of works by Laura Knight. In 1993 David took on his first gallery at 8 Cork Street which saw Messum's name become synonymous with the high- end picture dealers of Cork Street and the Messum's name also cultivated long-lasting associations with many international institutions and galleries, allowing them to promote British art internationally and at art fairs including Maastricht, The Netherlands; Tokyo, Japan; Miami and New York, USA; and Toronto, Canada. In 2020, the company opened its most recent space at 12 Bury Street, leaving Cork Street and Mayfair behind. Today, David Messum Fine Art continues to exhibit and offer for sale, works of art by 18th, 19th, and 20th Century British artists, on whose names the reputation of the company was founded, together with a continually changing exhibition program focusing on the Contemporary Artists they represent.
