TODD, George

1820 - 1904

George Todd was baptised at East Harling, Norfolk on 5 March 1820, son of John Todd and his wife Maria née Pratt. George married at St Mary's church, Bury St Edmund’s on 8 April 1845, Sophia Spencer (9 Mary 1818-January 1893). George was the proprietor of a substantial decorating business at Bury St Edmund’s, specialising in ceilings and murals, most of his work was executed in West Suffolk, he did however decorate the Chantry at Ipswich. An artist in oils and in 1851, a grainer, living at 87 St Johns Street, Bury St Edmund's with his 32-year-old wife Sophia and four of their eight children, Emily Sophia 5, Henry George 4, William Spencer 2 and Maria Fanny 1, all born at Bury St Edmund's. By 1861, George had moved his business to 68 St Andrews's Street, Bury St Edmund's where he remained until his death. He was later described as 'painter & decorator', 'painter or house painter'. George Todd died at Bury St Edmund's on 30 May 1904, aged 84, and both he and his wife were buried in St James's churchyard. He signed his work 'G. Todd'.
