WESTCOTT, Thomas

1863 - 1934

Thomas Westcott was born at Harwich, Essex in 1863, son of Benjamin Westcott (c1833-1908), a mariner, and his wife Sophia née Fryatt (1833-1889), who married at Harwich on 3 March 1860. In 1871, Thomas was an 8-year-old, living at Short Lane, Ipswich with his parents, 37-year-old Benjamin and 38-year-old Sophia, with siblings Benjamin John 9 and Emma Sophia 3, both born at Harwich and newly born John, born at Ipswich. Thomas married at Ipswich in 1890, Sarah Kettiel (1865-1930) and in 1891 he kept the 'Dolphin Inn' on the Common Quay, St Mary Quay, Ipswich. In 1901, a wine & beer retailer, at the 'Crown & Sceptre' in High Street, Ipswich with his 36-year-old Ipswich born wife Sarah and three children, Archibald Thomas 10, Elsie Sophia 6 and newly born Winifred Jessie. Thomas was a marine painter in oil and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1898-1902, exhibiting from 15 High Street, Ipswich in 1898, three works 'Declining Day', 'Luffing to Clear of the Nore' and 'Crossing the Leman Shoal', four works in 1900 'Gathering Clouds', 'A Fisherman's Breeze', 'Beating up the Channel' and 'A Riff in the Squall', in 1901 from 26 Pearce Road, Ipswich 'Off the Dogger Bank', 'Beating to Windward' and 'Wrecked on the Shipwash Sands' and in 1902 from 7 Orwell Road, Derby Road, Ipswich, two works and in 1903 two more paintings. He then gave up beer retailing and became a professional artist living at 59 Orwell Road, Ipswich before moving to Leicester and in 1911 a 'marine artist' living at 45 Milligan Road, Leicester with his wife and two unmarried daughters, Elsie and Winifred. Thomas Westcott died at Leicester in 1934, aged 71.
