WINTER, John

1791 - 1867

John Winter was born at Loddon, Norfolk on 15 March 1791, son of William Winter (1754-1806) and his wife Ann née Moffatt (1760-1842). John married at St Mary's Church, Bungay, Suffolk on 2 December 1810, Martha Watson (1794-1828) and they had at least ten children, including Cornelius Jansen Walter Winter. In 1841 John, being described as a painter, was living at Bridge Street, Bungay with five of his children and ten years later a 'general artist & glass stainer' living at Earsham Street, Bungay with a 16 year old grandson James, also described as a 'glass stainer'. An animal artist at Earsham Street, Bungay 1853-1858 who also specialised in stained glass for church windows. By 1861 John had moved to 5 Cornbury Place, Old Kent Road, London being described as 'artist'. John Winter died of 'old age' in Shipmeadow Union Workhouse, Suffolk on 16 November 1867, being incorrectly described as 'house painter'.
