1866 - 1958

Thomas Meikle Kelly was born at Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland on 1 May 1866, second son of Neil Smith Kelly, a chemist, and his wife Mary née Grant and in 1871, Thomas was a 5-year-old, living at 185 Kent Road, Barony, Anderston, Lanarkshire, Scotland with a 2-year-old brother Neil Campbell Smith and a servant, his parents were absent. Thomas was educated at Garnethill Public School and took art training at Glasgow School of Art as an aid to the business of calico printing. In 1881, his 48-year-old mother Mary was a widow and a house proprietor, living at 139 Great Western Road, Govan, Partick, Lanarkshire with her three sons, Archibald 16, Thomas 14 and Neil Campbell S. 12 and ten years later Thomas is noted as a 24-year-old mercantile clerk for a firm of Glasgow calico printers, living at Cecil Street, Govan, Partick, Lanarkshire with his mother and brother Neil Campbell. In 1901, his 68-year-old mother was living at Hollywood, Milngavie, New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire with her 32-year-old son Neil Campbell, an insurance broker, but Thomas was elsewhere. In the 1904/5 Kelly's Directory Thomas Meikle Kelly was living at Dunrowan, Tannoch Drive, Milngavie, Falkirk and was still there in 1923 when he took up some Great Western Railway debentures. A landscape painter in oil and watercolour who exhibited two landscapes at the New Gallery from Denston Park, Newmarket, Suffolk in 1888 and six others from Bedford in 1892 and from London in 1902. He also exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Walker Art Gallery; Royal Scottish Academy; Society of Scottish Artists; Royal Scottish Watercolour Society and the Aberdeen Artists' Society. In 1927, he was living at 'Dunrowan', Tannoch Drive, Milngavie, Dumbartonshire. He married Mary Boyd Ritchie and had a son and two daughters. Thomas Meikle Kelly died at Torwood, a small village located two miles north-northwest of Larbert, Falkirk, Scotland on 29 November 1958.
