NICHOL, Edwin

1855 - 1923

Edwin Nichol was born at Liverpool in 1855, son of William Nichol and his wife Christian Home née Tullis (1 August 1818-28 May 1899) who married at Markinch, Fife, Scotland on 1 June 1839. Edwin's father William died at St Pancras, London in 1858 and in 1861 his 43-year-old widow was living at 8 Willingham Terrace, St Pancras with seven children born between 1840 and 1857, four born in Scotland and three born in Liverpool. In 1871, the family were living at 120 Leighton Road, St Pancras but Edwin studied at Norwich before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1874 and in 1881 Edwin was a 25-year-old 'artist of painting' at the same address with his mother and 31-year-old sister Alice. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1879 and 1900 from London and was a regular exhibitor at the Kirkcaldy Fine Art Society and at the Nineteenth Century Art Society in London. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artists in 1881 from 120 Leighton Road, Kentish Town, 'Departing Day' and from Camden Road Studios, 27 Camden Road, London in 1883, amongst others 'In the Vale of Slaughden, Suffolk' and in 1886 'Meadows by the Orwell' and later exhibited from 1 Park Road Studios, Haverstock Hill, London. By 1898 he was living at The Cloisters, Snape, near Saxmundham in Suffolk when he exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art two works 'Poplars, Road, and River' and 'Sunset. In 1911 still unmarried, a 55-year-old 'on private means and a farmer' at the same address with two of his unmarried siblings as visitors, Christiana and Frank Ernest, another visitor was 39-year-old artist George Wilkinson from St Pancras. Edwin Nichol died at The Cloisters, Snape on 24 September 1923, aged 68. His name is sometimes spelt Nichols or Nicholls.
