CONSTABLE, Richard Golding

1932 - 2015

Richard Golding Constable was born at Lewes, Sussex on 8 June 1932, son of Lt-Col John Hugh Constable (27 February 1896-23 November 1974), who would joke "that he was the only Constable to hold down a proper job, his ancestors all having become painters" and his wife Eileen Saltmarsh (19 June 1899-8 January 1984), daughter of Edward George Saltmarsh, who married at Bombay, India on 25 March 1927. Richard was a great-great grandson of John Constable, and a younger brother to John Charles Philip Constable. Richard was educated at Marlborough College, Millfield School and at Cambridge University. For his National Service, he served in the Korean War as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. He taught art for many years in Suffolk and held one man shows in East Anglia and in London. He married, firstly on 1 June 1954, Elaine Good and they had four children and secondly in 1970, Valerie Zelle and had two more children. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1969-1974 and exhibited from 'Laneside', Theberton, Leiston, Suffolk, gouache paintings in 1968 'Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife' and 'Butterflies on Daisies' and four the following year, but in 1971 he exhibited from Northfield, Battonsborough, Glastonbury, Somerset, 'Breakwater with Umbrellas', 'Rushes and Waterbirds', 'Dragonfly on Seed Pods' and 'Mother, Daughter and Castle' with his last exhibits in 1974, 'Harbour Scene', 'Globewarts and Ships', 'Birds and Flowers' and 'Church and Thatched Cottage'. His gouache 'Puerto de la Cruz' was again exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club centenary in 1974. A prolific artist who continued working until 2013, when he became unwell. Richard Golding Constable died on 27 September 2015.
