BLUNDELL, Alfred Richard

1883 - 1968

Alfred Richard Blundell was born at Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk on 24 December 1883, son of Alfred Blundell, a domestic machinery agent, and his wife Augusta Ann née Garrod (1844-1938), who married at Ipswich in 1879. Young Alfred was educated at the Guildhall Feoffment Boys' School, Bury St Edmund's and studied at South Kensington School of Art. In 1911, a 27-year-old railway booking clerk on the Great Eastern Railway, living at 29 St John’s Road, Bury St Edmund’s with his parents, 57-year-old Alfred and 66-year-old Augusta, and two siblings, Esther Ellen 31, born at Ipswich and Joseph Clifford 25, born at Bury St Edmund's. In 1913 he entered the Slade School of Fine Art and was a landscape painter, etcher, printmaker, and sculptor being noted as a painter of architectural subjects in Britain and on the continent and in 1921 was an artist living on his own account at The Mill House, Cavenham, Mildenhall. Alfred married at Mildenhall, Suffolk in 1933, Eva Ellen Chatten (27 October 1900-2 March 1973), third daughter of William Chatten and Diana Burroughs of Felixstowe. An art teacher at Culford School, Bury St Edmund's, Alfred exhibited with the Stour Valley Group in 1922 an etching 'Pool and Tree at Cornard' and was a member of Ipswich Art Club 1936-1946, exhibiting from Cavenham Mill House, Icklingham, Bury St Edmund's in 1937 oils 'From my Studio Window', 'Culford-A Corner of the Lake', 'Floods and a Stormy Sunrise', 'Twilight at Hawstead', 'Larches in February' and 'At Dunwich'. He also exhibited at the Alpine Club Gallery; Walker Art Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery; New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy. In the 1930s he also exhibited at the Suffolk Art Galleries in St John's Street, Bury St Edmund's. In 1939, an artist & art master living at Cavenham Mill, Icklingham with his wife Eva. Alfred Richard Blundell died at Cavenham Mill on 18 December 1968, aged 84. He signed his works 'Alfred R. Blundell'.
