REES, Thomas Lewis
Thomas Lewis Rees was born at Stamford, Lincolnshire in 1874 and baptised on 20 August 1874, son of Thomas George Rees (1834-2 July 1877), a chemist, and his wife Emma née Mulholland, who married at St Michael's Church, Stamford on 8 April 1871. His father died when young Thomas was only three and his mother then took a boarding house at 41 Marine Parade, Brighton where his 36-year-old widow was living in 1881 with Thomas and his three sibling sisters Emma M 8, Rosa 5 and Elizabeth 4, all born at Stamford. Thomas married at Ipswich in 1900, Elizabeth Helen Sayers (19 November 1873-10 February 1945) and in 1901 was an architectural draughtsman, living at 117 Belle View Road, Ipswich and in 1911 at 278 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich with his 37-year-old wife Elizabeth and two unmarried Sayer sisters-in-law, Eleanor Mary 32 and Emma Susannah 27. A landscape painter and illustrator and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1910-1916 and exhibited from 278 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich in 1910 twelve watercolours, 'Sunset Study', 'Rushmere Heath', 'The Wind on the Heath', 'The Fallen Tree', 'The Old Quay, Woodbridge', 'Flatford Lock', 'Key Street, Ipswich', 'Barges in Dock', 'A Slope by the Orwell', 'A Bridge on the Gipping', 'The Dock, Ipswich and another and was a regular exhibitor showing some thirty works including 'Ripe for Harvest' (1911), his last exhibits were in 1915 with four watercolours 'Scouting', 'A Suffolk Farmyard', 'The Danes Grave' and 'Near Martlesham'. He was of 74 Sutton Road, Muswell Hill, London and was last seen alive on 24 February 1920 and his body was found at Sizewell, Leiston, Suffolk on 9 March 1920, he was aged 45. His wife Elizabeth died at 12 Spring Road, Ipswich on 10 February 1945, aged 72.
