SHAW, Agnes Margaret

1874 - 1966

As Agnes Margaret Airy, she was born at Kidbrooke, Lewisham, Kent on 4 December 1874, only surviving daughter of Dr Hubert Airy, and his wife Susan Cecilia Langton (7 November 1837-30 April 1924), youngest daughter of Skinner Zachary Langton of Barrow House, Keswick, who married at St John's Church, Keswick, Cumbria on 5 June 1872. In 1891, Agnes was a 16-year-old, living at Church Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk with her parents, 52-year-old Hubert and 53-year-old Susan with her 17-year-old sister Mary Gabriella, and they retained three indoor servants. Agnes married at St Mary's Church, Woodbridge on 13 April 1899, Herbert Alfred Shaw (6 February 1868-25 June 1942), 2nd master at Seckford Hospital School at Woodbridge, and they lived at The Mount, Woodbridge. Like her daughter Margaret Olive Shaw, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1926-1939 and as Mrs H. A. Shaw, exhibited from The Hayes, Woodbridge in 1926, two watercolours 'On Hollesley Heath' and 'Lane at Woodbridge', in 1927 three watercolours 'Bromeswell Common', 'Quayside, Woodbridge' and 'Blythburgh Church', two in 1928 'At Hasketon, Woodbridge' and 'Study of an Old Birch Tree' and was a regular exhibitor including in 1933 'Tide Mill, Woodbridge', 'Tide Mill and Mill Pond, Woodbridge' and 'Grey Day on the Deben' and in 1937 still from Woodbridge 'Churchyard Steps, St Mary's, Woodbridge'. In 1939, she was living at 20 Thomas Street, Cirencester with her now retired schoolmaster husband Herbert. Agnes Margaret Shaw was of 187 Petersham Road, Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey when she died at Nightingale Nursing Home, Strafford Road, Twickenham, Surrey on 8 November 1966, aged 91, she was buried in Woodbridge Cemetery. Their son was botanist Herbert Kenneth Airy Shaw (7 April 1902-19 August 1985).
