THIRTLE, Janet Isabel

1885 - 1963

Janet Isabel Thirtle was born at Bungay, Suffolk on 27 February 1885 and baptised at Bungay St Mary on 2 April 1885, daughter of John Farrer Thirtle (1853-1926), a draper, and his wife Eliza McJannet (1860-26 January 1945), second daughter of John McJannet of North Walsham, who married at North Walsham, Norfolk on 2 May 1883 and lived at the family linen draper's business at Market Place, Bungay. In 1911, 26 year old Janet was still living at Market Place, Bungay with her parents, 57-year-old John and 51-year-old Eliza, and a sibling sister Dorothy Frances 19, of their four children. A painter in oil of figure subjects and a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1905-1908 and exhibited five works, including 'Grandmother's Friends', 'Just Arrived' and 'The Jailers' she also exhibited at the Suffolk Art and Aid Association in 1912, an oil 'Falcon Meadows, Bungay'. She was still living with her parents in 1911 and died at 5 Flixton Road, Bungay on 10 October 1963, and buried in Bungay Cemetery, she was unmarried. Her painting 'The Horsefair', oil on canvas, was sold by Cuttlestones, auctioneers, on 23/24 August 2017.

Note: the Suffolk Burial Index gives her date of death as 1965 but GRO and her will as 1963. In the 1939 record she gave her date of birth as 27 February 1900 and her widowed mother's as 3 February 1864 both still living at 5 Flixton Road, Bungay.
