PAINE, Jill

1910 - 2002

As Arminel Mary Nethersole Gibson, she was born at East Preston, West Sussex on 13 May 1910. Known as Jill, she was already painting by the age of ten and a self-portrait the following year shows the rear view of a sturdy redheaded girl striding out along a path, swinging her stick. She studied at Chelsea Art College in 1936 and, at the age of eighty-two in 1992, in classes arranged by the East Anglian Chinese Brush Painters’ Society. Before the Second World War, we find her walking in the Himalayas above the snowline in Kashmir while staying with her brother Jack, who spent all his life as a teacher in India. During the War she enlisted in the WRNS, being promoted 2nd Officer on 1 July 1944. She married at Norwich in 1945, Revd Humphrey John Paine (20 February 1906-4 December 1989), rector of Little Melton, Norwich, and raised three children in their Norfolk rectory and were later living at Fressingfield, Suffolk. Jill never ceased to sketch and paint, and her sketchbooks and portfolios were retrieved by her daughter Mary after Jill's death and on every page, there is a colour illustration of Jill’s work, interspersed with reflections and quotations from her diaries. A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1947-1983 from Great Melton, Norfolk, Fressingfield, Suffolk and from Norwich. Arminel Mary Nethersole Paine died at Norwich on 27 May 2002.
