MADDISON, Annie Eleanor
Annie Eleanor Maddison was baptised at Holmer, Hereford, Herefordshire on 11 March 1875, daughter of Edward Maddison (7 June 1840-4 March 1898), a bank manager at National Provincial Bank, Hereford, who was born at Herringfleet, Suffolk, and his wife Fanny Hatton (1845-16 August 1917), daughter of Charles Hatton of The Barton, Hereford, who married at St Nicholas Church, Hereford on 25 October 1870. Shortly after her birth, Annie went to live with her unmarried uncle, William Maddison (1831-8 November 1913), a draper and local alderman, at 152 High Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk where she was living in 1881, a six-year-old with 50-year-old William and William's 47-year-old unmarried sister Eliza. She was educated at Lowestoft High School for Girls from where she passed her examinations in pianoforte at Trinity College, London in 1891 also studying at the Lowestoft School of Science and Art from where she won art prizes in 1895 and 1896 and exhibited a painting of a dancing girl in 1897. In 1911, a 34-year-old art mistress, still living with her uncle and aunt, now at 36 Alexandra Road, Lowestoft. A member and exhibitor at the Woodpecker Sketch Club, later named the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, 1905-1908 from Lowestoft where she exhibited in 1904, two still life oil paintings 'Grapes' and 'Pomegranates'. Her uncle William, who died in 1913, left his estate to his niece Annie. On 12 April 1918 she enrolled in the Women's Royal Naval Service rising to Chief Section Leader Clerk. Annie Eleanor Maddison died at 1 Charles Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex on 28 July 1964, aged 89, she was unmarried.
