HERIZ-SMITH, Gillian Lewis Mitford

1899 - 1987

Gillian Lewis Mitford Heriz-Smith, sometimes Lewis Gillian, was born at Great Cornard, Sudbury, Suffolk on 9 October 1899, youngest of the four children of Charles Mitford [Heriz-]Smith (4 February 1853-28 June 1933) and his wife, Marion Frances Georgina née Johnson (21 August 1862-1956), who married at All Saints, Clifton, Gloucestershire on 9 September 1885. In 1900, Charles changed by deed poll, the family name of Smith to Heriz-Smith. In 1901, Gillian was living at The Bungalow, Pot Kilns, Great Cornard, Sudbury, Suffolk, with her parents, 53-year-old Charles, a retired Indian official, and 38-year-old Marion and three siblings, Joan Mitford (1890-1976), Denzil Mitford (1894-1917) and Sybil Mitford (1895-1986), and by 1911 they had moved to 31 Bushmead Avenue, Bedford and by 1921 to 1 The Moorings, Kessingland, Suffolk when Gilliam was a 'dancing student' at Lowestoft High School. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1926-1938 and exhibited some 19 works from Carsilgy, Ruan Minor, Cornwall including in 1927, two oils 'Dawn' and 'A Cornish Wave' and a watercolour 'Sunset on the Lizard Downs' and was a regular annual exhibitor and as Miss L and Miss L M Heriz-Smith in 1932, an oil 'A Stormy Sea' and a watercolour 'Altanca Church, Piotta, Switzerland', in 1933 two works 'Winterton Beach, Norfolk' and 'Kennack Sands, Cornwall', in 1934 'The Old Pent House, Cadgwith' and 'The Village Street, Cadgwith', in 1935 two oils 'Geranium Time, Cadgwith' and 'Summer Time', in 1936 'Morning Sunshine' and 'Evening Calm', in 1937 two oils 'Drying Sails, Cadgwith Beach' and 'Fuschias Bloom in Cornwall'. Gillian was also a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1959 from 'Wings' Kessingland Beach, Lowestoft, Suffolk. In 1939, a retired teacher of dancing, living at Four Winds, Kessingland Beach, with her widowed mother Marion and her sister Sybil (1895-1986), a retired teacher of dramatic art. Gillian Lewis Mitford Heriz-Smith died at Kessingland on 29 June 1987 and buried in the family grave at Loddon, Norfolk, she was unmarried. Lewis was distantly related to artist Patrick Heriz-smith.
