DE POIX, Hugh Edmond Francois Marie Tyrel

Hugh Edmond Francois Marie Tyrel de Poix was born at Kensington, London on 22 April 1886, son of Edmond Albert Joseph Tyrel De poix and his wife Eugenie Alice Wentworth née Pemberton (12 September 1854-1944), who married at Kensington, London on 5 April 1883. In 1891, a 4-year-old, living at Broome Place, Bungay, Suffolk with his parents, 50-year-old Edmond and 36-year-old Eugenie, with three siblings, Gautier 7, Audrey 2 and newly born Ralph, all born in London, and they kept five indoor servants. Hugh studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 28 January 1908 to January 1913 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member and exhibitor at the Woodpecker Sketch Club, later named the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, 1906-1953, from Bungay, Suffolk and Ditchingham, Norfolk. A Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited at the Birmingham Art Gallery in 1928 and, at the 5th exhibition of the London Portrait Gallery in 1933 he had on show 'Mrs Harold Harding'. He married at Kensington, London in 1953, Mary Bernardine Hutchinson (1899-1985) and as Hugh Edmond Francois Marie Tyrel de Poix, he died at 3 Royal Chase, Tunbridge Wells, Kent on 4 April 1966, being survived by his widow. His memorial is in St Edmund Church, Bungay.
