NAPPER, Helen

Helen Mary Napper was born at Wivenhoe, Essex on 29 March 1958, daughter of Peter W. Napper (1930-2021), school headmaster, and his wife Barbara O. née Brooks, who married at Colchester in 1952. Helen was educated at Friends' School, Saffron Walden, Essex; Colchester County High School for Girls and studied at Colchester School of Art and Wimbledon School of Art from where she obtained a first-class honours degree in fine arts, completing her master's degree at Reading University. This was followed by a period at London University and the Central School of Art and Design where she did post-graduate advanced printmaking. Helen held teaching posts at Ipswich School of Art and at Colchester, Kings Lynn, Norwich, and Trent Polytechnic. A painter and printmaker, noted for her depiction of nude female figures. Helen has exhibited at the Stowell’s Trophy Exhibition at The Royal Academy; the Institute of Contemporary Art; Messum Fine Art; Rebecca Hossack in London; Printmakers at Reading Museum; University of Essex; Minories, Colchester with solo shows at Sue Rankin Gallery in London; Thackeray Gallery, London and locally at Wolsey Art Gallery, Ipswich; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh; Seaview Gallery, Walberswick and elsewhere. She has her studio at Aldeburgh, Suffolk from where she exhibited at the Strand Gallery and her work is found in public and private collections worldwide. She married at Hackney, London in 1992, author and script-writer Jonathan Paul Canter (born 1953) and they lived at 5 Castle Hill, Orford, Suffolk.
