PENTON, Jack

1917 - 2000

John Hugh Barrow Penton was born at Marylebone, London on 8 May 1917, only child of Surgeon Colonel Richard Hugh Penton (25 April 1863-20 December 1934), and his wife Kathleen Rosa née Green (c1882-2 February 1945), second daughter of Lieut. Col. Richard Spurgeon Green, who married at Langham, Colchester, Essex on 7 August 1892. Jack, as he was known, studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts and in 1939, whilst still a student, Penton won the competition for the exhibition centrepiece at Olympia. An artist and interior designer, a former director of the Bury St Edmund's Art Gallery Trust and illustrated Peter Cleverly's 'Drawing Together' (1995). He married at Oxford in 1947, Eileen Honor Pollington Milburn (7 January 1915-3 March 2013), who had served in the Women's Royal Naval Service, and they moved to Walpole in Suffolk. In 1952 Jack exhibited from Thorpe Morieux, Suffolk in the 'Paintings of East Anglia' exhibition at the Phoenix Art Gallery, Lavenham, 'Blythburgh Church' and 'Cliff Erosion at Dunwich' which were highly commended. In 1954 as a member of the Bury St Edmund's Art Society he exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's School of Art 'King's College Chapel'. John Hugh Barrow Penton died at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 4 June 2000.
