Susan Myfanwy Prudence Ryder was born at Windsor, Berkshire on 14 March 1944, daughter of Robert Ryder (16 February 1908-29 June 1986) V.C., M.P., and his wife Constance Hilaré Myfanwy Green-Wilkinson (15 May 1918-1982) who married at Windsor, Berkshire on 26 April 1941. Susan studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1960-1964 under Bernard Dunstan (1920-2017) and Maurice de Sausmarez (1915-1969) and was awarded the David Murray Travel Scholarship in 1964. She married at King's Lynn, Norfolk on 2 October 1965, Martin Graves Bates (born 1935) and they have a son and a daughter, but she continues painting as Susan Ryder. Elected a member of the New English Art Club in 1982 and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1992 of which she was Vice President 2002-2008. Originally a landscape artist but now specialises as a portrait painter but several of her solo shows often feature paintings of interiors. Susan has been commissioned to paint a wide range of people, most notably in 1981, by the then Prince of Wales, H.R.H. The Princess of Wales in her wedding dress and in 1997, H.M. The Queen, to celebrate the Royal Automobile Club's Centenary. She exhibits with Panter and Hall in London, Sarah Samuels Fine Paintings and at the New English Art Club. She has also exhibited at the Royal Academy with solo shows at Haste Gallery in Ipswich and in London at W.H. Patterson, Oakham Gallery, Ackerman Modern and elsewhere and, together with her husband, now spends her time between London and Scotland.
